Best air purifier for haze in Malaysia 2026

Most “best air purifier” lists repeat the coverage figure off the box. This page recalculates the room size each unit can actually hold during haze, from the CADR the seller themselves published — and that number is almost always smaller.

The worst API reading in Malaysia right now is 332 at IPD Serian. That is the air coming into your house whenever a window is open. See live API readings for your area

Price does not tell you what size room a unit can hold. CADR does. The “for haze” figure on each product below is worked from that listing's own CADR using AHAM's smoke rule — it is smaller than the coverage the seller advertises, and that is exactly why it is useful.

For bedrooms

One room with the door shut, roughly 10–15 m². This is the best value buy: eight hours asleep is the longest unbroken stretch you spend in one closed space.

For living rooms

A main shared space, roughly 15–30 m². Needs a higher CADR because doors open constantly and the room is rarely properly sealed.

Open living-dining areas or rooms above 30 m². Choice here is thinnest — most units marketed for “large rooms” state no CADR at all.

Few units in the catalogue state a CADR high enough for this category. We list what there is rather than padding it with units we cannot size.

Popular Shopee models, grouped by the room size worked from each seller's own CADR. Not lab-tested by us. Prices are from the last update and may have changed.

What CADR you actually need for haze

AHAM recommends a smoke CADR equal to two-thirds of the room's floor area in sq ft for ordinary dust — but for wildfire smoke, a CADR equal to the room's full area.

Haze is smoke, so the stricter rule is the right one, and it produces a much smaller number than the coverage on the box. A unit advertised at 43 m² is usually good for about 20 m² during haze.

The figures here are worked from the particle CADR in each seller's listing. AHAM rates smoke CADR lower than particle CADR, so treat our number as the generous end rather than the strict one.

HEPA H13, H14, and ungraded “HEPA”

H13 is the first grade that qualifies as true HEPA under EN 1822: it traps at least 99.95% of particles at the hardest size to catch. H14 traps 99.995%.

H10, H11 and H12 sit below H13 and are not true HEPA under the current standard, even though sellers still name them in the “H” series.

If a listing says “HEPA” with no grade, assume it is below H13. A seller who has H13 almost always says so.

How much to spend

Price tracks haze performance far less closely than you would expect. This catalogue contains a RM2,500 unit whose stated CADR covers about 14 m² — a bedroom.

For a single bedroom, a unit under RM500 with H13 and a stated CADR is enough.

Spend more only when the space is genuinely larger, or when you want a sensor and app control. Pay for CADR, not for the badge.

Air purifier or mask?

Both, for different jobs. A mask protects you outdoors; a purifier protects you indoors.

A cloth or surgical mask does not filter PM2.5. Only a well-fitted N95 does, and only outdoors.

Closing the windows is not enough on its own: with doors and windows shut, indoor PM2.5 still sits at roughly 55–60% of the level outside.

Common questions

Do air purifiers actually work for haze?

Yes, in one closed room. A single HEPA unit cuts indoor PM2.5 by roughly 30–60%. A 2025 randomised crossover trial also measured lower blood pressure among participants whose blood pressure was already raised.

What size air purifier do I need?

Work it from the CADR, not the coverage on the box. AHAM's smoke rule is a CADR matching the room's full floor area in sq ft. The “for haze” figure on every product on this page is already calculated that way.

Do I need HEPA H13?

Yes. H13 is the first grade that qualifies as true HEPA under EN 1822, at 99.95% of particles at the hardest size to catch. Grades below it let more PM2.5 through.

Which room should I put it in?

The bedroom, with the door shut. It is the longest unbroken stretch you spend in one closed space, and the trials that measured fewer night-time symptoms placed the unit in the sleeping area.

Is a mask enough instead?

Not indoors, and a cloth or surgical mask does not filter PM2.5 at all. Only a well-fitted N95 does, and only outdoors.
